My eating habits have improved significantly since I have started living in Wardha. I have been able to keep myself away from the junk food daily, though I get a craving for it regularly. It was during one such cravings yesterday, that I decided to eat baraf gola. The stalls of baraf gola in Wardha are pretty much similar to those in Mumbai, except that they don't keep the attractive coloured bottles on the sides of the stall.

I chose kala khatta and asked for a pinch of rock salt. I stood besides the stall relishing the gola when I saw this golawala preparing another gola for a customer, who wanted all the flavours - red, green, orange, and the regular kala khatta. Looking at the various colors, immediately a question came to my mind - How does this chap make the syrup? Does he buy it from elsewhere? The golawala did not hesitate to reveal the secret. He makes it at his home. On further questioning he said - he buys some perfumes, and colors and adds them to sugar syrup.

I could eat it no longer, for I realized what kind of perfumes and colors he uses.

Now the important questions is - Do all baraf gola walas make the syrup this way? What are the syrups used by golawalas on Juhu Beach and in malls in Mumbai made up of? Anyone has any clues? Is there any healthy alternative to the artificial colors? How much will it cost? Is there any market for an healthy alternative?

By the way, a baraf gola costs only Rs. 5 in Wardha. And in the main market, it costs only Rs. 3. The golawala had his eyes wide open for at least a minute when I told him that I pay Rs. 25 for the same stuff in Mumbai :D Within seconds the golawala had made plans to move to Mumbai, however he immediately realized that there are other costs involved in Mumbai, and it is wise to live in Wardha.
